Jerry Joseph and The Jackmormons: Singing in the Rain

With a lengthy career in such well-known bands as Little Women and, more recently, Stockholm Syndrome, Jerry Joseph has always been on the verge of “going big.” It’s not that his music is so innovative that listeners aren’t sure what to latch on to, but Joseph’s sound always has a distinctive ring that’s not really for the mainstream anyway. Backed by The Jackmormons—including longtime members JR Ruppel and Steve Drizos (and featuring cowriting by Walter Salas-Humara)—Singing in the Rain is typically personal, spiritual and introspective. Joseph turns on the charm with glorious soul-rocker “Arms by Your Side,” while “Drunken Moon” mixes horns and accordion for some slow-burning Cajun funk-noir. “Turn Faster” is a rolling, Springsteen-like lover’s tale, yet “Sparkle” follows as a brooding rocker flush with gritty guitars and floating harmonies. The title track, an oddly happy folk rocker, exemplifies why Joseph, thankfully, still keeps after it.
