jennylee: right on!

For over 10 years, Jenny Lee Lindberg has been bassist and vocalist for Warpaint, infusing the LA indie-rock band with a key aspect of their signature ethereal groove. On right on!, Lindberg emerges solo for the first time as jennylee. The album, co-produced by jennylee and Norm Block, resonates with traces of Warpaint, particularly their most recent self-titled album, which came out in 2014. The songs are moody and ambient, built with layers of ethereal sound and Lindberg’s crooning vocals, all imbued with a sense of quietly harnessed power. “bully,” a darkly lush number that is one of the album’s most effective, unfurls slowly and deliberately, building its intensity as Lindberg croons, “I’m not playing around” with notable fervor. The singer reprises that sort of subtle intensity on “offerings,” a stark, ambient number that buoys up its vigor in the vocal chorus, even as the instruments remain scant and steady. Lindberg’s potency comes in this way throughout the album—the passion and emotion arrive in her voice. She believes every word she howls and sings, and so we believe it too.
