Janis Joplin: Little Girl Blue: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Janis Joplin’s entire official recording career fits into a four-year span, 1966-70, and at this point in time, it would be unreasonable to expect to hear anything of value that hasn’t surfaced previously. With that in mind, the compilers of Little Girl Blue, the soundtrack to the recently released, same-named documentary, have done their best to keep the companion audio release at least interesting. Several of the 17 tracks come from the albums Joplin recorded with Big Brother & The Holding Company and on her own; the rest are oddities, with no major surprises but enough to entice the completist. Among the latter are an early, pre-rock, acoustic take of “Careless Love,” the consummate “Ball and Chain” from the Monterey Pop Festival, and various other live performances from the fabled trans-Canadian Festival Express tour, Woodstock, Germany and Detroit. The only real find of note is an incendiary “Piece of My Heart,” recorded in New York in April 1968, following the death of Dr. Martin Luther King. Audio quality throughout the set varies, but overall, it’s all quite listenable and presents a fair cross-section of Joplin’s output. It shouldn’t be the first Janis that a neophyte hears, but longtime fans will find much to savor.
