Ivan & Alyosha: It’s All Just Pretend

Lee Zimmerman on May 7, 2015

While the name Ivan & Alyosha might be better suited to a pair of Russian ballet dancers, in truth, it’s the handle belonging to a Seattle quintet named after the central characters in Fyodor Dostoevsky’s brilliant novel The Brothers Karamazov. Literate, yes. Literal, no. Rather, they take their cue from the unabashedly effusive sound purveyed by the likes of The Lumineers, Mumford & Sons, fun. and others that pride themselves on their populist appeal. While songs like “Something Is Wrong,” “Come Rain, Come Shine” and the title track appear to be stirred with softer sentiments, the anthemic arrangements allow them to soar on the strength of pent-up passion. Likewise, “Oh This Love” and “Tears in Your Eyes” start off simply enough, before added embellishment drives them to climax with pure pop celebration. Those hoping for an immediate aural connection will find It’s All Just Pretend to be a very real deal.
