Gregg Allman: Live: Back to Macon, GA

Live: Back to Macon, GA was recorded in January 2014, a good 10 months before The Allman Brothers Band said their goodbyes at the Beacon Theatre. But if it’s any indication of where Gregg Allman is heading now that the ABB is over, fans need not fret. Allman, despite working with another large outfit—eight musicians share the stage—doesn’t intend to attempt to recreate what came before, but he hasn’t abandoned his ideals or trademark blues-rooted approach either. The versions of Allman Brothers classics that he and the band offer here—and that would be most of the 16-track, two-disc set, from “Hot ‘Lanta” to “Midnight Rider” to the inevitable “Whipping Post”—are as spirited and virtuosic as ever. Allman’s vocals are poignant, and his organ and even guitar work (though he’s no Derek Trucks) are imbued with soul. Tunes from his solo catalog—“I’m No Angel” is a standout—hold their own as well. None of this would matter if Allman didn’t have a band that was up to the task, and this bunch—with added zest courtesy of the horns and percussionists—definitely is. The DVD, which is quite enjoyable to watch, albeit nothing revelatory, adds interview material and a pair of bonus tracks.
