Fly Golden Eagle: Quartz Bijou

There are musicians, and there are artists. With this 12-song collection—culled from a concurrent two-hour, 26-song release—titled Quartz, and designed to play along with The Beatles-influenced 1973 film, The Holy Mountain, Nashville, Tenn.’s Fly Golden Eagle demonstrate that they are full-fledged sonic artisans. With rowdy energy similar to Fly Golden Eagle friends J. Roddy Walston & The Business, many of Quartz Bijou’s songs play out like jangly ‘70s organ-driven psychedelia, but laced with hints of Detroit soul, retro surf rock and even glimpses of White Stripes-like rock (“Stepping Stone”). Lead singer/ guitarist Ben Trimble’s distinctive high vocals may wear on the listener after two hours, but the funky groove of “Medicine Hat” and the unpredictable, high-pace turns of “Horse’s Mouth” ensure that the individual songs triumph. Recorded at an abandoned college in central Texas, the raw power, driving bass and epic horn-driven build of “Tehuacana” leads into a spacey outro and fully captures the band’s innovative, imaginative spirit.
