Darin and Brooke Aldridge: Flying

Rob Slater on January 30, 2014

Cherryville, N.C.-based Darin and Brooke Aldridge’s fifth album Flying finds the husband-and-wife team in a confident, soulful and determined place. The 10-track, acoustic compilation is the follow-up to their 2011 debut, and it ebbs and flows between frantic bluegrass tracks and tender, gospel-like tunes. Throughout the record, Brooke asserts herself as one of the more powerful female vocalists in the scene with a standout performance on “Laurie Stevens,” a vocal track that garners comparisons to The Civil Wars’ Joy Williams. In the next breath, “I Gotta Have Butterflies” evokes a tender side, playing like a duet with minor string accompaniments. Flying closes with pure, exuberant joy as the adventurous “To the Moon and Back” and the percussive “Little Bit of Wonderful” leave the listener wanting more.
