Courtney Barnett: Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit

Melbourne singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett’s had a big couple of years leading up to her debut full-length, Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit, with her two previous EPs attracting rave reviews for her hyper-literate garage rock. The new album won’t disappoint fans looking for “Subterranean Homesick” rambles—opening song “Elevator Operator” scratches that itch—but Barnett excels at more deliberate fare, too, like “Small Poppies,” with slack reverb-drenched guitars, echoing the Pixies’ fascination with surf guitars. “Oh, the humanity, I wanna disappear into obscurity,” Barnett sings deadpan, over languid drums and bass, but it’s hard to imagine she’ll get that wish with the release of this killer record.
