Civil Twilight: Story of an Immigrant

Three of Civil Twilight’s four members—lead vocalist, bass and piano player Steven McKeller, guitarist Andrew McKeller and drummer Richard Wouters—are from the Republic of South Africa. (The band’s newest member, guitar and keyboardist Kevin Dailey, is American.) Story of an Immigrant frames the band’s journey from Africa to LA to their current home of Nashville, Tenn., with a song cycle full of polished, bombastic rock that is worthy of U2 and Coldplay. Larger than life drumming, massive guitars and keyboards and Steven McKeller’s impassioned vocals—which often drift into the over-emoting that makes Bono an acquired taste for some—are the album’s hallmarks. There’s a hint of South Africa in Wouters’ multi-rhythmic approach on songs like “Story of an Immigrant” and “When, When,” which also features some jazzy, Congolese guitar fills. Unfortunately, the rest of the album sounds like conventional soundtrack music, and the band has had luck with TV placements, notably on One Tree Hill and Terminator. “Love Was All That Mattered” stands out for its quiet acoustic approach and “Holy Dove” gallops along on a clever T. Rex-meets-Slade backbeat—but most of the songs use predictable verse, chorus, bridge arrangements that lead into long and not very interesting outros.
