Blackberry Smoke: Holding All the Roses

Glenn BurnSilver on March 11, 2015

Entering their 15th year of playing a gritty fusion of Southern rock, gospel soul, pumped-up country and blues, Blackberry Smoke’s latest reveals the passion and belief of this Atlanta quintet on every tightly constructed song. Rock riffs soar, barrelhouse pianos tinkle and rhythm sections thunder while Charlie Starr’s raspy to twangy to growling vocals (like a cross between Joe Walsh and Ronnie Van Zant) open a vault of emotional exploration. The perfectly loose yet propulsive energy that marks Blackberry Smoke’s complex nature breaks free under the production of star producer Brendan O’Brien. Thick, heavy and blessed with a seemingly telepathic interplay that fills in all the gaps without crowding out the original intent, Blackberry Smoke doesn’t abandon their roots either. The bluegrass-infused “Too High” and the country blues of “Lay It All on Me” offer a return to the back porches of youth, while simultaneously dismissing Southern rock’s supposed limitations.
