Bill Frisell: Guitar in the Space Age

Jeff Tamarkin on October 9, 2014

For Bill Frisell, there really isn’t any way to guess what’s next. Ostensibly a jazz guitarist—and he’s played for decades with the best in the genre—he’s just as likely to investigate the sounds of Brazil, the Gershwins, silent films, early country music, skronk-metal or John Philip Sousa. Although it should seem obvious that early-rock guitar music would have influenced a boomer like Frisell, until now he’s has never fully indulged his love of that sound. Guitar in the Space Age is where Frisell applies his instantly identifiable tone to such Top 40 instrumental classics as The Chantays’ “Pipeline,” Link Wray’s “Rumble” and Duane Eddy’s “Rebel Rouser.” But being Frisell, he and his collaborators can’t help but see where else that path might lead them, both backward and forward, which is why you’ll also hear his takes on “Surfer Girl,” “Turn! Turn! Turn!,” Merle Travis’ “Cannonball Rag” and The Kinks’ “Tired of Waiting for You”—all performed with nothing but love.
