Ben Lee: Love Is the Great Rebellion

Despite unruly beginnings, courtesy of an early outfit knowingly dubbed Noise Addict, Aussie Ben Lee’s solo career has mostly been marked by a flair for melody and uncommon accessibility. So it really says something that his latest album, Love Is the Great Rebellion, comes across as his most seductive set yet—a series of songs conveying a Zen-like mantra and philosophical ruminations on life, love, God and related subjects of similar consequence. That’s a heady task to be sure, but Lee pulls it off with impressive aplomb, never ranting or preaching but instead offering the quiet assurance that allows each of these songs to shine. The singular allure that graces “Everything Is OK,” “The Universe Inside” and “The Body of Love” is both optimistic and inspiring, all sunny anecdotes for a generally gloomy world. And when Lee shares his celebratory stance on tunes like “Giving Up on Miracles,” “Happiness” and “Big Love,” the ebullience and exhilaration are practically contagious. This particular rebellion offers plenty of inducement to rally around the cause.
