Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn: Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn

Justin Jacobs on October 16, 2014

Coming from the royal couple of banjo players, Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn is a loose, lovely collection of new songs, old-time folk, gospel and blues. It’s the kind of off-the-cuff album that sounds like it comes directly from the front porch of its two expert hosts—an invitation that any bluegrass fan would die for. Abigail Washburn’s light, wonderfully melodic voice floats through these dusty gems, with Bela Fleck providing touches of harmony, while their two banjos are the only other sounds. Unsurprisingly, that’s enough to bring these tunes to life. Haunting opener “Railroad” is a gorgeous take on a traditional folk classic (“Someone’s in the kitchen with Dinah…”) and tracks like “Little Birdie” and “And Am I Born to Die” follow suit: simple, beautiful and timeless.
