Flying Lotus: Until the Quiet Comes

Warp

Steve Ellison continues to cement his stature as abstract hip-hop’s bravest voice on his fourth full-length as Flying Lotus. Designed by the artist as “a collage of mystical states, dreams, sleep and lullabies,” Until the Quiet Comes is definitely music meant to be heard at night, as Alice Coltrane’s most talented grandnephew tones down the glitch and turns up the soul on this 47-minute listen. Back again are longtime conspirators Laura Darlington and Niki Randa on vocals and master bassist Thundercat—each as essential to the FlyLo fabric as Ellison himself. Also returning from his appearance on 2010’s Cosmogramma is Thom Yorke, who lends his throat to the freeform future jazz of “Electric Candyman,” while Erykah Badu cameos on the esoteric “See Thru to U.” Quiet is a comely progression of Flying Lotus not only as a producer, but a formidable composer as well.
