Jeff Coffin and the Mu’tet: Into the Air

Ear Up

In case anyone was wondering if Jeff Coffin would still have the time to continue making music with his Mu’tet after replacing the late Leroi Moore in the Dave Matthews Band, here’s the answer. And in case anyone was wondering whether the saxophone adventurer would significantly alter the Mu’tet’s sound, the answer to that one is: not really. Although Jeff Sipe now sits on the drum stool and Bill Fanning has been added on trumpet, the band’s trademark marriage of funk and fusion, rock drive and soul remains intact. Bassist Felix Pastorius, son of Jaco, has truly come
into his own in recent years and takes a more commanding role, and some of the jams are spacier and more daring; but for the most part, Into the Air takes the Mu’tet to the next level
without abandoning anything that went before.
