Dan Deacon: America

Domino
The Baltimore-based electronic composer Dan Deacon has broadened his musical palette considerably since his last outing, 2009’s dance floor-friendly Bromst. Since then, he’s scored his first film (Francis Ford Coppola’s Twixt ) and performed at Carnegie Hall. Those experiences make themselves heard loud and clear in the neo-classical overtones that inform songs like the four-part title suite and “Prettyboy.” Raveups like “Lots,” which had an early online release, and “Guilford Avenue Bridge” will undoubtedly keep his fabled dance floor followers on their feet. But this time around, the grooves are all the more effective since they’re couched in a mix of acoustic and synthified settings that evoke sound sculptors ranging from Laurie Anderson to Frank Zappa to Brian Eno. Bop for brainiacs, in other words.
