Tedeschi Trucks Band: Everybody’s Talkin’

Sony Masterworks

The live two-disc set Everybody’s Talkin’ from the Tedeschi Trucks Band—recorded over three nights in Oct. 2011 in Toronto, Washington, D.C., and Bridgeport, Conn.—is a musical and emotional powerhouse from start to finish. The release includes original songs, covers of Stevie Wonder, Muddy Waters, Bill Withers and Joe Cocker, and a new tune, “Nobody’s Free.” Mixed by Jim Scott and engineered by Bobby Tis, the follow-up to last year’s Revelator has many highlights, including the soulful “Midnight in Harlem” (with a “Swamp Raga” intro and a bit of The Allman Brothers’ classic tune “The Little Martha” interspersed), the bluesy “Learn How to Love” and the spiritual, uplifting “Bound For Glory,” with many standout smoky vocals by Susan Tedeschi and Mike Mattison. Eleven players round out this band with a blasting horn section and rhythmic percussion, Oteil Burbridge’s funky bass lines and Kofi Burbridge’s flighty flute. Disc two is punctuated by a fun, high-energy version of Stevie Wonder’s “Uptight” where Tedeschi’s voice shines, and a heartfelt rendition of Sam Cooke’s “Wade in the Water” that rounds out the disc.

I think this is a good album but that they should have waited to record it. IMO the versions they are playing now are better than the ones on the album.
