Jennifer Hartswick: Ocean Floor
Jennifer Hartswick has been part of the jamband scene for a long time. And whether it’s her evocative trumpet playing on Phish’s The Story of the Ghost or her sultry vocals in the Trey Anastasio Band, many jamband fans have already grooved to her without even knowing it. But it’s on her solo albums that Hartswick truly takes center stage, reveling in her first love—jazz. On her latest release, Ocean Floor, Hartswick channels a modern day Ella Fitzgerald, with powerful songs, powerfully sung. The album mixes timeless subjects like the indignation of love, with contemporary sounding grooves (“Liar,” “Walk Away”). It’s a skillful balance of blues, soul and jazz combined with jammy, good vibes (“Possibility,” “Let Me In”) to create a universally appealing record— dancing guaranteed.
