The Soul Rebels: Unlock Your Mind

Rounder

Following the path blazed by The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Soul Rebels have studied traditional jazz and served tenure in local marching bands, using their classic foundation to break the often rigid status quo found within the New Orleans music community. Hiphop, rock, pop, R&B, reggae and more mix effortlessly with a conventional brass band approach highlighted by bouncing rhythms, Mardi Gras Indian chants and the fact that there isn’t any bass guitar—rather there’s a sousaphone, bass and snare drums, trombone, trumpet, sax, etc. With solid originals, inspired covers like Allen Toussaint’s “Night People” and Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” and an instrumental take on Stevie Wonder’s “Living for the City,” as well as a string of Crescent City royalty making guest appearances including Cyril Neville, Trombone Shorty, Meters guitarist Leo Nocentelli and Galactic’s Ben Ellman, Unlock Your Mind puts The Soul Rebels in the company of legends—and rightfully so.
