Chairlift: Something

This spacey, electro-pop crew Chairlift emerged in 2008 alongside fellow breakout acts (and pals) MGMT and Yeasayer, thanks to choice placement of their jittery single “Bruises” in an iPod ad and singer Caroline Polachek’s pipes, bursting with Feist-like clarity. On their second release—despite the lackadaisical title—there’s a sense of urgency. In an attempt to regain some momentum—the trio is now a duo. (Multi-instrumentalist Aaron Pfenning departed last year.) “I Belong in Your Arms” and “Amanaemonesia” bounce with the same blissful ‘80s synth-panache as “Bruises.” Other songs feel bogged down by forced emo-depth (“Cool as a Fire”). When they relax, Chairlift are masters of mood rock. Too often though, self-seriousness works against them.
