Justice: Audio, Video, Disco
Vice/Ed Banger
A few years after breaking out on the electro-rock scene with their ubiquitous updated disco and nursery rhyme-laden single, “D.A.N.C.E,” Paris, France-based “It” DJ duo Justice underwhelm on their uneven sophomore offering Audio, Video, Disco. Whereas Justice’s rock and roll-flavored, beats-heavy debut was as soulful and pleasantly subversive as its symbolic title, Audio, Video, Disco lacks the whimsical quality and banger-centric abandon that this French twosome have come to represent. Taking an electro-kraut cue from legendary producer Giorgio Moroder, songs like the lackluster title track, which never manages to reach a pivotal climax, or the prog-inspired “Brianvision” that resembles jarring elevator music, never fully launch. The fiercely bass-filled “Cannon” shows club-friendly potential, while the crunchy beat-filled single “Civilization” has moments of promise—but the inconsistent song structure is almost a dance deterrent.
