M83: Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming

Mute

M83’s sixth album has been highly anticipated—perhaps more so than usual—thanks to a video for the strikingly lovely new track “Midnight City.” But the album hasn’t been over-hyped. Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming is an eclectic, interesting collection of 22 tracks split into A-sides and B-sides. On some numbers, band mastermind Anthony Gonzalez uses his ambient electronica to build dreamy soundscapes (“This Bright Flash”), but in other places, the French musician pushes the boundaries of song. “Raconte-Moi Une Historie” (which means “tell me a story”) features a child’s voice recounting the tale of a frog over a backdrop of gently dancing beats. As a whole, the album is a rounded experience, deeply moving at times, Asian Massive and wondrous and strange at others.
