Johnny Winter : Roots
A round table of legendary greats graces the new Johnny Winter record with consistently powerful results. With 11 nods to the guitarist’s influences, the tracks range from steamrollin’ bliss (“T-Bone Shuffle” featuring Sonny Landreth ) to dualin’ axes (“Done Somebody Wrong” featuring Warren Haynes ) to harp-enhanced (“Last Night” featuring John Popper ) to urban sprawl (“Bright Lights, Big City” featuring Susan Tedeschi ) to rousing nirvana (“Dust My Broom” featuring Derek Trucks ) to aching heartbreak (“Come Back Baby” featuring John Medeski ). The listener is left with a strong set of songs and a reminder of just how much Winter has promoted the American blues form.
