The Uglysuit: Awwww, Schucks

Everybody Loves Everybody

There’s an ever-present urgency throughout Awwww, Schucks, the latest and supposedly final release by the Oklahoma-based band, The Uglysuit. At the heart of this energy is a seemingly ubiquitous, driving rhythm that serves to ignite the album’s most soaring moments (“On We Go,” “Oh the Tides”). The existential lyrics are equally pressing are: “I’ve searched the vast depths of oceans and found that nothing lasts” (“1902, Deep Ocean”). But no song attains a more perfect fusion of elements than “The Freeworld,” an epic, seven-minute conglomeration of twists and turns that take listeners from the throes of self-reflection to the heights of enlightenment. With its compelling balance between the reverb-drenched, ethereal rock of Fleet Foxes and the animated instrumentation of Jukebox the Ghost, Awwww, Schucks proves to be a remarkable album.
