Explosions In The Sky: Take Care, Take Care, Take Care

Temporary Residence Ltd.

On Explosions In the Sky’s first album in more than four years, the celestial Texan group pushes its guitar-driven brand of cinematic post-rock to new creative heights by expanding its sonic arsenal while still challenging its audience more than ever. Lengthy opening jams “Last Known Surroundings” and “Human Qualities” both incorporate classical guitar, while “Be Comfortable, Creature” finds the Austin quartet moving into psychedelic drone territory. Elsewhere, the atmospheric closing number “Let Me Back In” grooves along utilizing such unorthodox rhythm methods as body percussion and Japanese singing bowls. However, given that the group still chooses to play too close to its loud-soft-loud safety net for most of Take Care, Take Care, Take Care, it would be great to see the band really let the experimental freak flag fly next time.
