Yellowbirds : The Color
Royal Potato Family
“I’m going to explore,” Sam Cohen croons with a tepid reservation that swells into a soaring confidence throughout the title-track of The Color. Prophetic words from the founding member of Apollo Sunshine whose newest project, Yellowbirds, proves to be a vehicle for his own exploration. His “solo” debut finds the Brooklynite and a loose collection of his musician friends charting a daring path. On “In Our World,” the psychedelic projections of Cohen’s mind meld with the conventions of indie-folk to create an experimental, yet accessible psychedelic sound. Fuzzed out guitars awash in reverb, combine with hook-laden synth-lines to bring the sounds of yesteryear into the modern day (“The Honest Ocean”). Somewhere between Talking Heads and Sufjan Stevens, Yellowbirds has claimed its own patch of the sonic landscape.
