Lubriphonic: The Gig Is On

Led by guitarist/vocalist Giles Corey and drummer Rick King, Lubriphonic oozes style and attitude. Think Funkadelic riff-based funk with the rhythmic burn of the Tower of Power horn section. “Under The Line” begins with a playfully harmonized line by the horns, guitar, and bassman extraordinaire Pennal Johnson. The intro washes away to a JB-style groove as the trombone takes over the middle section with a swinging solo. Here Corey is content to comp as the rhythm guitar, but he is equally adept at taking the lead and letting it rip in the title track. “Pimp Limp,” with Ivan Neville on Hammond organ, bumps with a strutting gait, and proves with a concise statement what the rest of the album demonstrates: funk’s alive.
