Maserati: Pyramid of the Sun

Temporary Residence LTD

Jersey Shore’s Pauly D and his brethren should be ashamed of the bad name they’ve given to the time-honored art of fist-pumping—once a rock fan’s way to show appreciation, but now forever associated with gym/tan/laundry. Think of Pyramid of the Sun as our time to take it back: the nine-track, nearly all-instrumental, album is packed with jams that start down here…then build…then explode up here. “Ruins” crunches with the taste of industrial metal, “We Got the System to Fight the System” works within the ultra-delayed guitar sound of post-rockers like Explosions in the Sky and the final track, “Bye M’Friend, Goodbye” begins with the multi-tracked sound of a grunted mantra. They all serve the same purpose: to get your hands in the air and your butt on the move—droppin’ sound grenades without having to deal with picking them up.
