Notoriously elusive and genre jumping, British electronic virtuoso Squarepusher has taken another unexpected musical U-turn with his latest project Shobaleader One. Part side-project, part bizzaro supergroup, its d’Demonstrator is an unpredictable sonic thrill ride that incorporates disco-laden krautrock, monstrous metal, atmospheric funk and jammed-out Zappa Band-like sensualized robotics. Morphing stylistically from track to track, Squarepusher’s Tom Jenkinson employs a few mystery musicians—whose true identities have been cleverly masked by whimsical pseudonyms—to add bombast to his singular, program-heavy sound. The resulting nine tracks unfold like an electric love letter—all filled with infectious energy and a feeling of Squarepusher’s rekindled passion for his craft. Whether it’s the cosmic-cool “Laser Rock” or the rock-infused monolithic single “Megazine,” this effort is guaranteed to be an instant classic.
