Girl Talk: All Day

Illegal Art
This 70-minute mash-up draws from nearly 400 samples that reference everything from current hip-hop to ‘80s pop and beyond. After all, the first notes you hear are taken from Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is a Place on Earth.” A lot of classic rock factors into the equation as Gregg Gillis, who performs under the moniker Girl Talk, loves using well-known oldies: “Don’t Fear the Reaper” and “Sunshine of Your Love” are among All Day’s most recognizable samples. And while Gillis gets creativity points for mashing “Layla” with B.o.B.’s “Haterz Everywhere,” it is hard to be truly impressed by Gillis’ brand of plunderphonics. On the bright side, the sheer quantity of music used here is quite remarkable. Perhaps you could bury All Day as a musical time capsule of our generation and pull it out in 50 years.
