The Avett Brothers: Live, Volume 3

American/Columbia

“It’s so good to be home,” Scott Avett proudly asserts with his rebel yell punctuating the end of “Talk on Indolence.” The audience at the Bojangles Coliseum cheers wildly for his song and sentiment alike. And that is what makes Live, Volume 3 such a compelling experience. A CD/DVD that showcases 15 flawlessly executed songs from The Avett Brothers’ August 2009 concert in Charlotte, N.C., the album feels undeniably heartfelt. From the frenzied punk-grass of its earliest tunes (“Pretty Girl from Matthews”), to the tender reflections of its latest hits (“I and Love and You”), the band plays with an energy and gratitude that’s simply inspiring. And the unrehearsed moments that capture these brothers overcome by joy, and reflecting on the journey that’s taken them from busking on the streets of their hometown, to filling its coliseum, are equally convincing.
