Jerry Lee Lewis: Mean Old Man

Verve/Universal

A guest list including Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Ringo Starr, Ron Wood, Merle Haggard, Sheryl Crow, Eric Clapton, John Fogerty, Solomon Burke, Slash, Willie Nelson, Robbie Robertson, Mavis Staples and James Burton might, in some cases, tip the listener off to a cover-up: the lead artist is washed up, so let’s bring in the big guns and maybe no one will notice. That’s not what’s going on here at all: this is Jerry Lee Lewis, “The Killer,” at his most murderous in decades. Co-produced by Jim Keltner and Steve Bing, Mean Old Man deftly balances Lewis’ rocking and country sides. The Glimmer Twins assist on covers of their own “Dead Flowers” and “Sweet Virginia,” and a fired-up “Roll Over Beethoven” finds Ringo and John Mayer doing all they can just to keep up with the mean, 75-year-old man.
