Roky Erickson: True Love Cast Out All Evil

Anti-
For all that he’s endured with institutionalization, poverty and sometimes-untreated mental illness—an astonishing story detailed in the documentary You’re Gonna Miss Me — Roky Erickson writes songs of disarming, autobiographical clarity, warmth and resilience. Producer Will Sheff chose 12 of them for True Love Cast Out All Evil. Sheff’s versatile indie rock band Okkervil River backs Erickson on the album and knows when to lay back and let Erickson simply strum and sing in his cracked: Okkervil give the songs an inspired lift, making “Bring Back the Past” into crisp twang-pop and edging “Forever” and “Think of As One” toward string-and horn-softened country-soul.
