Charlie Hunter: Gentlemen, I Neglected To Inform You You Will Not Be Getting Paid

Spire Artist Media

The wit and wisdom of guitarist Charlie Hunter comes through in this set of nine tunes, which are tied together by a common mood. A quick glance at the titles reveal what one can expect to find on this groove-based outing. With songs like “High And Dry” and “Ode To My Honda Odyssey,” not to mention the title song, Hunter beefs up the sound with horns, at times hearkening back to some of John Scofield’s earlier work. Drummer Eric Kalb, trumpeter Eric Biondo and trombonists Curtis Fowlkes and Alan Ferber help flesh out the record. While the music’s energy keeps your toes tapping, the writing feels too generic for someone of Hunter’s talent.
