Cyro Baptista’s Banquet of the Spirits: Infinito

Brazilian percussionist virtuoso Cyro Baptista‘s second album with his latest project, Banquet of the Spirits, is an energetic affair. It is no surprise that an artist with collaborative credentials including Trey Anastasio, Herbie Hancock and Paul Simon would have his pick of the litter for contributions to his own work. Opener “Infinito Coming” juxtaposes Jorge Continentino‘s flute with Brian Marsella‘s melodica, setting a festive tone that underlies the entire album. In addition, fellow Brazilian Romero Lubambo displays his guitar prowess on “Adeus’s Filhas.“ While the guest list is impressive (*Kevin Breit*, Ikue Mori, Peter Scherer), it is Baptista’s inventive percussions, utilizing everything from finger symbols and an udu to gas pipes and a vacuum cleaner hose—that make this recording a thought-provoking experience for the listener.
