The Black Keys: Two of a Kind
During the past decade, The Black Keys have slowly emerged as one of the most successful independent-minded bands in the world. Using their love of blues riffs as their base, vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney have melded their disparate influences in garage rock, hip-hop and radio-friendly indie into a sound that’s distinctly their own. One of the hardest working bands around, The Black Keys chose to break-up their never ending tours with a constant stream of studio sessions, outside production projects and occasional solo outings. Produced by Danger Mouse, their new album El Camino is poised to propel the Ohio-bred duo into arenas once and for all. Relix is proud to not only take a peek inside the Black Keys’ creative process but also to anoint them as guests editors of this special issue.

Neil Young: 40 Years of Harvest

A musical chameleon, Neil Young is simultaneously a politically active experimentalist; country-rock trailblazer and the Godfather of Grunge. Yet, his most well-known album is 1972’s Harvest, a largely stripped down collection of songs featuring contributions from David Crosby, Graham Nash, Linda Ronstadt, Stephen Stills, James Taylor and the London Symphony Orchestra.
On the eve of the album’s 40th anniversary, Relix Editor-at-Large Jaan Uhelszki takes an in-depth, personal look at one of the most cherished albums of all time.

Howlin Rain: Into the Psychedelic Wilds
In 2006, Howlin Rain frontman Ethan Miller described his then new band as music to “sing along with while drinking whiskey in the bathtub, on a Saturday night, with your dog.” On their latest
release The Russian Winds, the California psych-rockers have finally reached that sound with the help of veteran producer Rick Rubin and American Recordings. Relix contributing editor Richard
B. Simon spent time with Miller and his bandmates as they crafted the album—and helped connect the dots between California’s heavy-psych world and Phish’s jamband community.
