Widespread Panic: Reap & Sow

Since emerging from the Athens, Ga. club scene in the mid-‘80s, Widespread Panic has grown into one of the most successful—and influential—jambands of all time. During that time, the group has overcome the death of founding guitarist Michael Houser and a sticky split with his replacement George McConnell. Shortly after the group celebrated its 25th anniversary, longtime Panic scribe Aaron Kayce sat down with all six members of the group to discuss their journey from clubs to national amphitheaters, as well as the band’s upcoming hiatus and enduring legacy.

Gillian Welch: Old School Girl in a New School World

Gillian Welch and her musical partner David Rawlings made waves in the ‘90s with the release of Revival, a refreshing blend of classic, American sounds. Though the duo’s follow-up records cemented its reputation as one of the country’s premiere revival acts, Welch has not put out an album under her own name in eight years—until now. Slightly Stoopid: Grass Roots

Without much radio airplay or media attention, San Deigo’s Slightly Stoopid has quietly become one of the summer circuit’s most consistent live draws. The group can sell out amphitheaters across the country, lead package tours and share the stage with everyone from Snoop Dogg to G. Love to Fishbone and Steve Kimock. Emily Zemler hung with the band at its headquarters to discuss both the band’s grassroots evolution and its welcome reputation as a poster child for pot culture.

Wavy Gravy is an undisputed hippie icon—a lifelong activist who has helped shape the country’s political and musical climates through his protests, charitable work and all-star benefit concerts. Longtime Bay Area writer Blair Jackson visited Wavy Gravy at his Berkeley, Calif. Hog Farm Collective compound to see why a counterculture icon is still impacting those around him at age 75.
