Steampunk Sons

Looking back, Joey and Dave Landreth were actually going for a steampunk sound when they teamed up. The brothers had separately kicked around the music scene in their hometown of Winnipeg for years. Joey played a lot of pop country with a blues flavoring. Dave was into indie-rock with roots tones. One day, the sons of a bar-band musician—who raised them on Bonnie Raitt, Ry Cooder and John Hiatt—joined forces over steampunk. “We wanted to be badass,” said bassist Dave, sitting on the front porch of The Groove, an indie record store in East Nashville. “We listened to a lot of Kings of Leon. We love that stuff.” But as soon as the pair started to let the music guide them, they found their sound: a mix of Americana blues punctuated with badass in-a-lovely-way harmonies. “We embraced that [direction] and started turning the sound into our own,” explains vocalist and slide guitarist Joey. With drummer Ryan “Rhino” Voth and guitarist Ariel Posen, Bros. Landreth recently played the Americana Music Fest, delivering sets that quickly gained them crowds and buzz—“Met @thebroslandreth who gave me a copy of their CD,” tweeted BBC music tastemaker Bob “Whispering Bob” Harris. “It’s brilliant!,” he said of the band’s January release, Let It Lie.
