Kopecky Family Band

If Kopecky Family Band were to add a “Frequently Asked Questions” section to their website, then “How are you related?” would undoubtedly top the list. The six members aren’t kin, but their playfully chosen band name has had a very real effect on how people view what they do. “This has been a theme of the last year, like, how much our band name has come to fruition and made us realize, ‘Wow, we literally function as a family,’” says singer/songwriter Kelsey Kopecky. She and Gabriel Simon casually assembled the chamber-pop group as they sat around playing songs for their friends at Nashville’s Belmont University. “They all just happened to play different instruments,” Kopecky explains. “So it just made sense: ‘OK, let’s have a band practice.’” That was half a dozen years ago. This year, ATO Records picked up the group’s album Kids Raising Kids for wider release. Between the familial moniker, Kopecky and Simon’s tendency to sing in supportive unison—as opposed to spotlight-stealing, opposite-sex dueting—and a DIY approach to adding string, horn and accordion textures, the camaraderie comes through loud and clear. “I feel like anything you put your mind to, you can do,” Kopecky says, “whether it’s playing an instrument you haven’t played before or being adventurous enough to not be afraid of sounding horrible in front of your bandmates.”
