Funky Southern roots rock and soul band Gaslight Street formed in the winter of 2007 and honed in on a sound that’s been referred to as “moonshine and honey.” Their live show is characterized by poignant vocals, great instrumentation and a strong sense of song craft. “Our rhythm section is solid and capable of many things – there’s always a pleasant surprise in every song that makes each time we play it unique,” says songwriter Campbell Brown. The band’s music comes from “a good story, a riff that’s stuck in my head, struggle and conquest, love and heartache – it’s a combination of all things that add up to what we call the human experience and gives us all reason to live,” he says. Last year, Gaslight Street released their sophomore album, Idle Speed, which Brown says defined where he was physically and emotionally while writing, including tunes about introspection, pain, loss, change and hope. The track “Vicksburg” tells the story of a Southern man reluctantly fighting in the Civil War, featuring Cary Ann Hearst of Shovels & Rope. “Whether it’s the funky rhythms from the bass and drum, the soulful guitar and organ combo, or the strong melodies of the vocals, something’s bound to grab you,” Brown says, adding that the band is in the process of recording their third album and hope to release it this spring. “We play music that young people can dance to or their parents can put it on to kick back and relax.”
