Rebecca Brandt

Brooklyn, N.Y.
Pocket Composer
www.rebeccabrandtmusic.com

Native New Yorker Rebecca Brandt has already worked on music for a movie, play and commercials and she’s just in her first quarter century of life. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, this summer saw the release of her debut album, Numbers & Shapes, which she wrote and orchestrated for 30-plus instruments. Though her musical interests are quite varied, Brandt is a classically trained composer who studied scoring and composition at New York University. She finds that in addition to art and literature, she’s influenced by the “motivated, artistic” people around her and their creations. “I feel I have to keep up, and that pushes me,” she says, mentioning that some songs on the album were “meticulously thought out” while others “just kind of happened.” Brandt also enjoys exploring layering and various combinations of instrumentation to create “pocket symphonies,” a phrase she says she has borrowed. Brandt saw fun and a challenge in shaping pieces around music theory concepts. “I would sometimes choose an obstacle—like to write a song around the number three—and compose around that,” she says. “For this record, I was largely inspired by numbers, music theory, shapes and contours—hence the title.”

Amy, your post soooo resonated with me today! I was just tninkihg the other day about technology, and the downside. I worried that my grandkids, all born in the age of high-tech, would miss out in any way because of it. Like you, I ran through my own memories and what you say is so true. For me, I always smile tninkihg of my days on the beach with Three Dog Night playing. I was a huge Doobie Brother’s fan, Fleetwood Mac, Carpenters, Hall and Oates shessh, I could seriously go on. And yes, those songs can whisk me back to any given moment and all those emotions rush through me. I had a turntable next to my bed as a teen, and placed a stack of record to go to sleep by. I even nabbed the Romeo and Juliet album and recited some of the lines by heart; the old theater gal in me.Forgot to mention too that I was born close to the time Elvis popped his precious head up in the music industry for the world to see. I was a huge fan growing up, but wasn’t a groupie gal in that regard. I could clearly see his failings made terrible husband material, but I loved him for his golden voice and the way he sang from the heart.
