Big Gigantic (Relix Revisited)

This week we look back to October 2009 when Big Gigantic first appeared as an On The Verge act…

Boulder, Colo.
Jazz-Driven Electronica

Given that Big Gigantic has already toured with Conspirator, remixed STS9’s “Empires” from its Peaceblaster album and played the closing set at Michigan’s Rothbury festival, it is easy to forget that Motet saxophonist Dominic Lalli only formed the project in late 2008. Originally conceived as an outlet for the beats and synth jams that Lalli worked up in his spare time, Big Gigantic quickly developed into a partnership with area drummer Jeremy Salken. Fusing electronic soundscapes with live drums and saxophones, Big Gigantic immediately separated itself from the rest of the jamtronica pack with a sound rooted in the work of more traditional jazz musicians like John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock. The band offered its debut EP as a free download and plans release a second EP this fall. “It is sort of the new wave of what’s happening, and it’s the best way to get your music out to everybody,” Lalli says of the free EP. “It’s been a tremendous help in allowing us to get music to people so they can hear it, and then get them out to the live shows.
