Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews has his own distinct recipe for his self-proclaimed “supafunkrock” sound: a blend of jazz and funk, a little bit of rock, a dash of hip-hop and a pinch of soul. Born and raised in New Orleans’ famed 6th Ward neighborhood, Andrews cut his teeth on the road backing the likes of Lenny Kravitz and Galactic. Now, he steps out onto his own with Backatown, a tribute to his hometown that features guests like Kravitz, Allen Toussaint, Marc Broussard, Charles Smith and producer Ben Ellman (Galactic), as well as his band Orleans Avenue. “I want to be creative and it seems a lot of horn players get caught up in something that’s been done a million times,” Andrews explains. “I’m an innovator and hope that my music will be the standards for younger musicians rising up in the next 15 years.”
