“Flipping TV channels was a favorite activity of ours when we were kids—and sometimes we’d record [the audio],” explains Tom Van Buskirk, who formed the glitchy electronic outfit Javelin with his cousin George Langford. These purveyors of addictive, yet ephemeral, dance jams channeled their youthful ADD tendencies into the schitzo-phonic debut Jamz and Jemz, an ambitious effort chock full of power-packed bangers that pay homage to the almighty mix-tape. To achieve their genre-jumping sonic point of view, these Rhode Island-born, New York-based quirky cousins splice and dice songs, samples and beats—adding stomping percussion and warped vocals to create a sound that’s like Girl Talk on a tropical acid trip. While Jamz and Jemz is a fleeting collections of songs that never stretch longer than four-minutes, Javelin’s ayet-to-be-titled sophomore effort promises to deliver a satiating dose of lengthier tunes (Langford is no stranger to longer song structures, having frequently sat in with his childhood friends Addison Groove Project). “Now we are interested in making songs that are satisfying the whole way through. Like a good dessert, where you are no longer hungry for that brownie, you let the brownie go.”
