Gregory and the Hawk

Meredith Godreau began using the alias Gregory and the Hawk in 2003 and the name lives on as she continues to create music with her college pal Mike McGuire. In the past they’ve played with a band but now they perform as a duo. Both play guitar and Godreau sings. “It’s sort of a freedom thing,” she explains. “It’s cool to represent songs in different ways when we record with a band and when we play them live, just the two of us.” On their latest release, Moenie and Kitchi, Godreau and McGuire’s soft, acoustic sound echoes with a hint of American nostalgia. Too pristine to be considered folksy, Godreau’s voice sails over *Doro Tachler*’s crying violin and *Adam Christgau*’s soft-spoken drumbeats. The album is named for Godreau’s grandparents and draws inspiration from their farm. “I’m worried that sometime soon we might not have the farm to go back to,” says Godreau, refusing to reveal more. Much like her stage name, Godreau chooses to remain a mystery— allowing her music to speak for itself.
