Warren Haynes Remembers Guy Clark, Shares Cover of “Desperados Waiting for a Train”

Warren Haynes was among those to pay tribute to the late Guy Clark, who passed away yesterday. In a post on his Facebook page, Haynes recalled the night he first met the famed songwriter along with Dickey Betts and Gregg Allman.

“I met Guy Clark the same night I met Dickey Betts and Gregg Allman. They, along with Don Johnson, came by the studio where I was recording with David Allan Coe,” Haynes explained. “As it got later Dickey, myself, and Guy passed around 3 acoustic guitars- 2 pretty good ones and 1 with the action so high it was nearly impossible to play. We took turns playing/singing songs while each of us accompanied the others.”

Haynes also recounts that Clark played a new song for him (at the time) called “Heartbroke” that he was pitching to Ricky Skaggs. “I thought (or maybe said out loud) ‘great song but I don’t hear it for Ricky Skaggs.’ Of course I was proven wrong.” The tune went on to be a number one hit for Skaggs.

Haynes then shared his cover of “Desperados Waiting for a Train.” Listen below.
