Chris Stapleton Talks Meeting Axl Rose for the First Time: “He was great”

July 13, 2016

Nashville rocker Chris Stapleton recently found himself on a rather unique stage, as the Traveler singer opened up for Guns N’ Roses on their “Not In This Lifetime” reunion tour.

On the gig, Stapleton told Rolling Stone Country that “nobody threw anything at us, so I think that was a victory.” But the singer also got a surprise following the main act’s set when Axl Rose’s assistant contacted both Stapleton and guitarist/producer Dave Cobb to visit the frontman.

“He was great,” Stapleton said. “Very polite and gracious and we got to say hi for a few minutes. I’m sure he was tired and had to go get cleaned up before the buses or planes rolled out, but he was a gentleman and we had a brief conversation about music and both went on our way. It was a good night.”

Stapleton said that he asked Rose “how many nights in a row he can possibly scream like that” and the two discussed Rose’s upcoming stint with AC/DC. “It was conversations you don’t think you’re ever going to have.”
