Jeremy Piven Joins Wayne Kramer, Jesse Malin and More in New York

A diverse music of collaborators sat in with MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer and his backing band at New York’s Bowery Electric last night. The performance was billed as Kramer’s first New York solo show in a decade and previewed material from his forthcoming studio release. (The album is due out in May.).
Partway through his set, Kramer invited out Bowery Electric co-owner—and solo artist—Jesse Malin to sing on a cover of The Clash’s “Jail Guitar Doors,” a song written about Kramer’s own incarceration. In a more unusual move, he also brought out actor Jeremy Piven to play drums on the song. Piven played in a few Midwest bands and famously sat in with Umphrey’s McGee at New York’s Irving Plaza in 2005. Before the song, Kramer discussed his nonprofit Jail Guitar Doors USA, which provides inmates with instruments. Later in the night, Dictators singer Richard “Handsome Dick” Manitoba also emerged to sing on MC5’s “Kick Out the Jams.”
