Jackie Greene to Play With The Black Crowes, Live Album Coming in March

Jackie Greene will join The Black Crowes as a guitarist and vocalist during their recently confirmed tour dates. It appears that he will be replacing Luther Dickinson, who is currently touring with his longtime group the North Mississippi Allstars. The rest of The Black Crowes lineup remains the same, with Chris Robinson (lead vocals, guitar), Rich Robinson (guitar, vocals), Steve Gorman (drums), Sven Pipien (bass) and Adam Macdougall (keyboards). Greene has played with Chris Robinson in the past as part of the Weir, Robinson & Greene Acoustic Trio, in addition to both being a part of the ever-rotating cast of Phil Lesh’s Friends. (In related Crowes news, Chris Robinson recently told Hittin’ the Note that Neal Casal—who is part of Robinson’s Brotherhood band along with Macdougall—almost joined the band as a guitarist back in 2005 but was bumped due to Marc Ford’s brief return to the group).

As previously reported, The Black Crowes announced the first leg of their 2013 “Law Down With Number 13” tour yesterday. Tickets for the first leg will go on sale January 11 at 10:13AM local time. The dates for the second leg of the tour will be revealed shortly. In addition to the tour dates, The Black Crowes have also confirmed that they will be releasing Wiser For The Time, a 26-track live album that will be available as a vinyl and digital download on March 19. The album contains 15 acoustic and 11 electric songs from their five-night NYC run in the fall of 2010. An acoustic version of the song “Under a Mountain”—which is not on the album— can be downloaded for free here.

Never got a chance to see the Crowes, I am NOT missing this chance. Plus Jackie Greene in the mix? Sounds killer!

why? CRB is great , rich’s band is great ,the crowes inc.must owe someone some money .this is all about business not for the passion of music.

is Jackie the new Warren? all signs point to YES. not feeling this.

Ralph Jones December 28, 2012, 22:44:24

I kind of hoped the hiatus could continue only because I wanted to see CRB. I liked they idea of them shelving the Crowes for a few to five years. Of course I’ll go see them now.

YES !! Get my chance to see Steve Gorman and having Jackie is a big PLUS too !!!

I’m a very big fan of the Crowes. CRB is okay but I would prefer to see Chris use his voice for more challenging material in the years that remain for his full vocal range. He’s not getting any younger. ANd let’s be perfectly honest, CRB is not exactly about solid, timeless songs as much as musical meandering and hippie posturing about the cosmos and vibes. That’s great and all as long as you have the substance to back it up. CRB, IMHO does not as of yet.

Also, I have a great deal of trepidation about Jackie filling in on lead. From the performances I’ve seen of his, he simply doesn’t have the technical skill or lexicon of chops it takes to adequately replace Luther or Marc. I still find him remarkably talented but more in a coffee house performer kinda way.

Jackie Green…NOT have the technical skill or lexicon ? Are you on drugs ? This guy is a master. He’s been playing and entertaining for years and is positively out of this world talented. Hey, if he’s good enough to open for BB King, he’s gonna knock Black Crowes out of the ballpark. We’re Greenheads always ! LOVE YOU JACKIE !!!

Luther is the best, he made the Crowes great! They need Peter Green, not Jackie Green. Please come back Luther.

Morris April 8, 2013, 15:46:13

saw the crowes at terminal 5 with green on guitar and really missed luther… saw them twice when luther was in the band and they sailed… he takes the band to a whole new level of sublime… green goes up the neck to fast he has no finesse, no melodic skills at all… i want Luther back… and love the north mississippi allstars…

Marc Ford was their best lead guitarist hands down.

Always kinda liked the Crowes, Saw them when they were ‘The best Zeppelin cover band’ .... but lost touch until 2008. Warpaint and BTFATF both blew me away and revived me into a ‘gotta have everything’ Black Crowes fan. I always liked the Faces/Ronnie Wood influences. Warpaint, to me put them in the stratosphere – it made me feel like I was listening to an American Led Zeppelin. Warpaint was the best album of 2008 ! Please guys, stick with Luther and do it one more time. Love, Scott
