The Flaming Lips and Friends Cover King Crimson’s In the Court of the Crimson King

Two years ago The Flaming Lips recorded their own interpretation of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. Now they have moved into prog realms with their take on King Crimson’s 1969 release In the Court of the Crimson King. As with Dark Side the group drew in Stardeath and White Dwarfs (led by Wayne Coyne’s nephew Dennis Coyne Wayne). Other participating acts include New Fumes, Linear Downfall and Spaceface. The resulting recording entitled Playing Hide and Seek with the Ghosts of Dawn, is now streaming now at the group’s Satellite Heart Radio.

Although the album was a project of Wayne Coyne’s, this is not a Flaming Lips album. “Dark Side” on the hand, was. The Lips are only on one track this time (and barely at that), though they (specifically Wayne) are involved in a lot of other ways. I’ve followed the making of this album since last spring and have detailed it all (including exclusive interviews, photos, details etc, a “making of” video etc) at http://thefutureheart.com/2012/10/15/crimsonking
That post explains who did what, and how the Lips are connected to it. If you are not already familiar with New Fumes, Stardeath and White Dwarfs, Linear Downfall or Spaceface now’s the time to discover their awesome shades of contemprary psych. New Fumes also made each of the limited edition vinyl. No two copies look the same. It is selling now at a few indie record shops and will soon be available online. There’s pictures of the multi-color vinyl and info on which stores are stocking them at http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.454107094639836.114260.238542309529650&type=1

At the Lips free show in OKC a couple weeks ago as my friends and I were walking up to the Zoo Amp we heard StarDeath and probably some Lips playing “In the Court of the Crimson King.” Shoulda gotten there sooner to hear it from the beginning
